Advertising to Children Must Be Banned - 957 Words

As a little girl I loved watching television shows on Saturday mornings. I’d get upset when a show would proceed to commercial. That is until I watched the shiny new toy being played with by the girl my age and of course the cool new one that came into the happy meal, then I’d forget. After seeing the appealing commercial I’d run to my mom and try to slickly mention it. â€Å"You know McDonalds has a new Monster’s Inc. toy in their happy meal. Isn’t that great? â€Å"Now I realize that back then I was targeted by big companies to beg my parents for things that I didn’t need or that wasn’t good for me in order to make money. Advertising today is affecting the health of today’s children because they eat the unhealthy foods advertised to them on:†¦show more content†¦(Children as Consumers) Advertising has a negative effect on a child’s health. Approximately 20% of our youth in the United States of America are now overweight with obesity rates in preschool age children increasing at an alarming speed. The issue of childhood obesity is a serious one. Obesity rates have tripled in the last twenty-five years. As reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled among children between the ages of two to five and ages six to eleven. In teens ages twelve to nineteen, prevalence rates have tripled. Obesity in childhood places children and youth at risk for becoming obese as adults and associated poor health such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain kinds of cancer. Research has found strong associations between increases in advertising for non-nutritious foods and rates of childhood obesity. Most children under the age of six can’t distinguish the difference between regular programming and adve rtising. Children under the age of eight don’t understand the persuasive intentions of advertising.
